Hopefully the LAST Part Order?...

For starters, I’ve upgraded from the Decklink Duo 2 to the Decklink 8K Pro. It’s only a difference of $150, and this will allow for some insane future-proofing. They pushed an update for these cards so they can now run four independent 12G SDI signals, allowing for up to DCI 4K on each individual channel! No clue how well this will work with the Ryzen APU, but I figure it’s better to start high and have to swap down. (Side-note: DCI stands for Digital Cinema Initiatives…

We finally Have a Case!

So my 2U chassis arrived today, but I haven’t even opened it, and I decided to scour the internet again over the past week. This time, I'm using every combination of search I can imagine, and going where no man dares go: Page 2 of the Google search results. Quick tip: try dimensions in smart units (millimeters) and freedom units (inches). I also dropped the 5.25" expansion bay requirement, and instead focus on chassis that have a slim drive opening, and if I absolutely need the hotswap, I can manually cut the chassis open…

Ah yes. That feeling when you put a computer together, and it actually posts!

So I don’t have the case yet, but I can still build the computer, right? I forgot how small ITX was. It was pretty easy to build, and everything snapped together just like it should. I forgot I had Windows 10 installed from previously using the NVMe, so I didn’t even have to get out my trusty install thumb drive…

The Case of the Perfect Case

Don’t you love it when you make a plan and then it all falls apart?

What was supposed to be a simple build turned sour when Newegg informed me that my preferred case (iStarUSA D-1101-ITX) was out of stock, and they canceled my order. My needs aren’t too radical, so I shouldn’t have too much of an issue finding a new case…

The First Rumblings

The parts have been ordered! I wasn’t sure this was actually going to happen, but after discussing it over, running the numbers, and the. Getting a contract for a live event in March, I decided to pull the trigger. Because it’s going to spend 90% of the time in the house, it is a personal purchase, which also provides insurance, just in case anything happens to the business, and they come take all my camera, computers, and editing equipment…

What Am I Even Building??

When building a new computer, it’s helpful to come up with a list of must-haves first. Things that are non-negotiable. From this, you can decide what things are optional, how important they are, and what the costs (monetary and design) are.

For this build, the target use case will be running projector computers at conferences and events. Something compact, lightweight, configurable, and expandable, plus, somewhat budget-friendly…
